Remembering when Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho shushed Liverpool fans in 2005 League Cup final wit

Jose Mourinho's intense rivalry with Liverpool has been well-documented through the years.

Chelsea, under Jose, and the Reds had some fiery Champions League clashes in the 2000s, and he also played a key role in their title challenge collapsing during the 2013/14 season.

But during those battles in the 2000s, it could be argued one action was the birth of the rivalry.

Mourinho, in his debut managerial season with the Blues, met Liverpool in the League Cup final in February 2005.

While it is remembered as the first time the Portuguese lifted silverware in England, before several other trophies followed, his 'shush' gesture towards Liverpool fans remains a talking point.

Chelsea trailed for most of the match thanks to John Arne Riise’s superb volley in the opening minute.

The Blues failed to break down a sturdy Liverpool defence until Steven Gerrard headed into his own net in the 79th minute.

It prompted Mourinho to celebrate by appearing to 'shush' the Liverpool fans that were sitting close to his dugout.

He was then sent off by fourth official Phil Crossley, who Mourinho says was advised by a police officer to remove him.

The 57-year-old could not go and take a seat in the stands and instead watched the final ten minutes of normal time and all of extra-time in Sky’s television interview room.

Chelsea coped well without their manager on the sidelines as extra-time goals from Didier Drogba and Mateja Kezman put Mourinho’s men in an unassailable lead.

Antonio Nunez pulled one back for Liverpool, but it was not enough as Mourinho won his first of four League Cups.

At the time, Mourinho was adamant his 'shushing' was directed towards the English press and not Liverpool fans.

The 'shush' was allegedly to tell the press ‘be calm, put the pen in your pocket’.

He accused the journalists of ‘talking too much’ and ‘trying everything to take confidence from us’ following consecutive defeats to Barcelona and Newcastle in the lead up to the Liverpool match.

Mourinho added: “I have a lot of respect for the fans of every team in this country and every team in the world.

“I respect Liverpool fans and I tried to show this. I have also to adapt to your country and your culture because it's a country where I live and work.

“For me it's unusual to be sent off by the police and not by the referee or fourth official.

"The policeman told the fourth official, 'Mr Mourinho has to go out.' This is a special situation for me but, if I made a mistake, and did something I cannot do I have to adapt.”

Fast forward 15 years and Mourinho will face Liverpool for the 30th time when his Tottenham side travel to Anfield in a table-topping Premier League clash on Wednesday evening.
