Memphis Depay's future at Barcelona looks increasingly doubtful after the striker was stripped of his shirt number.

The Netherlands international, 28, is no longer part of the LaLiga club's plans after the £37.8million signing of superstar striker Robert Lewandowski from Bayern Munich.

It is understood Lewandowski will be given Depay's No.9 shirt as the Catalans try to force the Dutchman out of the Nou Camp.

Lewandowski wore No.12 in a pre-season friendlies against Real Madrid and Juventus over the past week, but this is expected to change.

The Poland international, 33, was Europe's top scorer over the past two seasons at Bayern Munich, while Depay struggled to make an impact in his first season at Barca.

Newcastle and Tottenham are thought to be interested in bringing the former Manchester United forward back to the Premier League.

Barca are thought to want £17million for the Dutchman, whose contract expires in 2023.

The two top-flight sides are unwilling to meet that valuation as things stand.

Depay is not the only player being exiled by Barca as the club seek to balance their questionable books this summer.

The Catalans have spent more than £150million to land Raphinha, Jules Kounde and Lewandowski, while also signing Franck Kessie and Andreas Christensen on free transfers with big wage packages.

This is despite reports of significant debt at the club and an outstanding payment of £17m owed to midfielder Frenkie de Jong, who deferred his salary amid financial problems inflicted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Barca had reportedly agreed a £67m fee with Manchester United for De Jong, but now the club's president Joan Laporta has insisted they want him to stay.
